Predoctoral Program
Periodontal diseases comprise a range of conditions that impact the supporting structures of the teeth. Much research indicates that periodontal diseases are responsible for more lost teeth in the United States than any other oral disease, including dental caries.
The central goal of the predoctoral educational program is to ensure that dental students acquire the most current knowledge and skills in periodontics and teach to the highest standards of patient-centered and evidence-based care. Toward this end, our current program builds on a wide-array of educational experiences, including didactic, laboratory, and clinical courses. Our innovative curriculum capitalizes on the state-of-the art technology infrastructure within the School of Dentistry, which allows students to be on the cutting-edge of evidence-based periodontics.
Dental students completing the periodontics program are well prepared to enter general practice. Dental students become knowledgeable and experienced in multiple aspects of periodontics, including the following:
- Recognize & distinguish clinical and radiographic signs of disease
- Conduct a comprehensive periodontal examination
- Assess patients’ risk for developing periodontal diseases
- Plan and execute nonsurgical periodontal therapy
- Evaluate the results of nonsurgical periodontal therapy
- Understand the basis and potential of referral for advanced periodontal conditions in basic pertodontal surgical therapy opportunity to participate
- Manage patients with acute periodontal conditions
