Supporting scientific discovery is a vital part of the mission of the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD).

UMSOD has strong transdisciplinary dental, oral, and craniofacial health research programs composed of diverse disciplines of basic and clinical research. UMSOD has been a top 10 US dental school in NIH funding since 2010 (top 4 in 2020; Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research). UMSOD research programs are closely associated with investigators in the School of Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy at the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) campus. Active collaborations with investigators in engineering and computer science at the University of Maryland College Park are also ongoing. Located in the heart of the Baltimore-Washington region, UMSOD investigators also collaborate with nearby federal research institutions, including the National Institutes of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). UMSOD research programs are further strengthened by the active collaborations with investigators in international institutions.

Resources and Information

Student Research

Graduate students, post-graduate residents and fellows conduct research across a number of disciplines, including cancer biology, neuroscience, anatomy and microbiology. Their work forms the foundation of advanced degree programs. Students in PhD programs, the DDS program, master’s degree programs and the DDS/PhD program work closely with faculty members in state-of-the-art laboratories. Their research is published in prestigious journals and they frequently present at national meetings. The Student Research Group creates a community for student researchers and organizes a variety of professional development programs.
