A group of graduates pose in white coats

The University of Maryland School of Dentistry’s (UMSOD) White Coat Ceremony is an important tradition for third-year dental students and second-year dental hygiene students to come together and be welcomed into the profession by the school. The ceremony represents the opportunity for students to articulate their commitment to their chosen profession of dentistry or dental hygiene and symbolizes the transition to clinical patient care. Doctor of Dental Surgery and Dental Hygiene students participate in the White Coat Ceremony by taking the oath when they transition to clinic.

The White Coat Ceremony features a guest speaker delivering the keynote address, faculty members “coating” the students with their white coats, and a recitation of the oath to acknowledge their acceptance into the dentistry profession.
