Speaker Biography

Chia-Yu Chen, DDS, DMScChia-Yu (Jennifer) Chen received her dental degree (DDS) from Kaohsiung Medical University in Taiwan and completed her periodontology training and Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) in oral biology from Harvard School of Dental Medicine.

At HSDM, Dr. Chen was selected as a Presidential Scholar and, at graduation, was the recipient of both the James H. Shaw Award for excellence in biomedical research and the Joseph L. Henry Award, which recognizes excellence in research and clinical training from Harvard.

Dr. Chen is a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. She maintains a clinical practice limited to periodontology and implantology in the Faculty Group Practice at the Harvard Dental Center.

Course Description

With the advent of digital dentistry, clinicians find themselves inundated with new materials, hardware and software in daily practice. A thorough comprehension of the technologies will help us integrate digital solutions to promote communication, as well as accelerating treatment processes and optimizing treatment outcomes. This presentation will allow dentists to become familiar with the digital workflow, with an emphasis on the implementation of the additive manufacturing, namely 3D printing technology for dental implant surgeries. The various 3D technologies (FDM, SLA and DLP) and their pros and cons will be discussed. Various clinical scenarios will be presented to demonstrate advantages and challenges of digital technologies.

  • To understand the digital workflow for implant dentistry.
  • To discuss the various 3D Printing technologies available in dentistry.
  • To recognize the limitations of digital technologies.
