"This award reflects not just my individual efforts, but the collaborative work of dedicated colleagues, students, and community partners who share my commitment to expanding access to quality oral healthcare for all children, particularly those from underserved communities," said Dhar.
A board-certified pediatric dentist, Dhar is nationally and internationally renowned for his contributions to pediatric oral health, particularly in expanding access to care for underserved populations. Through his leadership, research, and advocacy, he has played a vital role in shaping evidence-based policies and advancing public health dentistry both in Maryland and beyond.
Dhar’s commitment to advancing pediatric dentistry and evidence-based practice is reflected in a distinguished record of leadership and recognition.
He is a graduate of Leadership Maryland’s Executive Program and currently serves as Director of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD). In 2024, Dhar received the Foundation of the College of Diplomates Dr. Ronald A. Bell Mentor of the Year Award, honoring his dedication to guiding the next generation of pediatric dentists.
A nationally recognized leader in evidence-based dentistry (EBD), he has twice received the Suzi Seale Coll Evidence-Based Dentistry Service Award—in 2022 and 2024—for his contributions to evidence-based research. The award honors exceptional contributions to the profession through EBD-focused service, scholarship, and policy development.
Dhar also leads the Oral Health for Underserved Uninsured Children program at UMSOD, which delivers essential dental care to uninsured children in Baltimore and nearby areas. Under his leadership, the program has created close to 1,500 dental homes and earned multiple grants and legislative support for its innovative work in advancing health equity.
Over the past decade, he has received numerous accolades for his scholarly work, including the 2016 AAPD Paul P. Taylor Award for his systematic review on therapies for early childhood caries, and the 2018 Evidence-Based Dentistry Mid-Career Faculty Award from the American Dental Association and the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research. These honors recognize his leadership in integrating EBD into research, clinical care, and education, and his lasting contributions to the field’s scientific foundation.
"I have been a dedicated advocate for a belief that has grown into my life’s mission: ensuring every child has a dental home. This honor will further motivate our team to continue developing innovative approaches to pediatric oral health challenges," said Dhar. "By bridging research, education, and community service, we can create sustainable solutions that make a meaningful difference in children's lives and advance health equity in Maryland and beyond."
