Dr. Renan Fernandes do Espírito Santo, PhD, Biography

HeadshotDr. Renan Fernandes do Espírito Santo, Ph.D., earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Federal University of Bahia (Brazil) and completed his Ph.D. in Science at the Instituto Gonçalo Moniz FIOCRUZ-BA (Brazil). He served as Professor of Pharmacology for the Institute of Health Sciences, at the Federal University of Bahia and Professor of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology in the Medical School at the UNIFTC (Brazil). With more than 10 years of experience in pharmacological laboratories, he has worked on the prospection of antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory, and immunosuppressive compounds, through in vitro and in vivo preclinical tests. In addition to experience in the induction and standardization of several animal models of pain and inflammatory diseases.

As a member of several research groups at FIOCRUZ-BA and UFBA, he has extensive experience in writing, developing, and validating pre-clinical research projects. He currently has more than 20 articles published, 1 patent deposited in Brazil and 1 patent approved to be deposited in Brazil, USA, and Japan, in preclinical drug development. He also works in research on the production line and development of nanoparticles for the incorporation of new drugs. He was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Neural and Pain Sciences at the University of Maryland (UMB) before starting as a Pharmacology Instructor at the School of Dentistry – UMB in 2023.

Dr. Santo believes that education is a tool to change lives and sees the professor's function as a mission of life.
