Research

The Department of Dental Public Health conducts research in a number of areas that cut across disciplines and involve multiple partners. The following represent a small sample of the kinds of projects our team has led.

Biostatistics

Our team has expertise in the analysis of large, complex datasets, including nationally representative assessments such as the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS), and Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS).

Health Care Utilization

Our investigators have described dental visit patterns for the general public, vulnerable populations, and the poor across all age groups.

Health Literacy

Our team has investigated the links between health literacy and oral health among adults, with particular attention to the role that conceptual knowledge plays as a mediating factor.

Financing of Care

Our investigators have led the way in describing costs of dental care to individuals and the health care system, as well as the types of dental procedures that are most commonly received.

Disease Surveillance

We have partnered with the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) on numerous occasions to quantify the burden of diseases that exists among public elementary school children in the state.
