Speaker Biography

Dr. Sheikh is a Clinical Scientist in Periodontics and an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Applied Oral Sciences and Dental Clinical Sciences at the Faculty of Dentistry-Dalhousie University. Dr. Sheikh was trained as a dental clinician and a biomaterial scientist and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada in the specialty of Periodontics and also a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. In addition to delivering several conference talks, presentations, and CE courses both locally, nationally, and internationally, Dr. Sheikh has more than 70+ research publications, reviews, book chapters, case reports, and editorials in peer-reviewed and other journals. His research expertise lies in developing novel biomaterial options for bone grafting and alveolar ridge augmentation applications.

Dr. Al-Waeli is a certified Periodontist, a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, and works as an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Dentistry at Dalhousie University. Dr. Al-Waeli received a Ph.D. from McGill University and a Master in Periodontics from Dalhousie. Dr. Al-Waeli is a member of many professional and academic associations around the world such as the American Academy of Periodontology, Canadian Academy of Periodontology, European Federation of Periodontology, and International Association of Dental Research.

Course Description

The lecture provided by two certified periodontists and clinician scientists will discuss surgical considerations and techniques, with the proper use of bone graft materials and barrier membranes, to achieve predictable alveolar ridge preservation and develop extraction sites for future implant placement. The Lecture will also focus on surgical techniques used to achieve guided bone regeneration (GBR) to augment the ridge width and height. Also included in the lecture will be an overview of various bone graft biomaterials, membranes, and suture materials and how to use them in combination with alveolar ridge preservation and guided bone regeneration therapy. The speakers will also focus on the various complications that are encountered with these procedures and techniques and how to manage them clinically.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Understand in brief the biology behind bone remodeling and resorption.
  • Identify and classify bone defects in edentulous sites.
  • Recognize different bone graft materials and membranes and their clinical applications
  • Understand the concept of alveolar ridge preservation and guided bone regeneration for various soft and hard tissue defects.
  • Understand the various suturing techniques that are useful in achieving primary closure for the augmented sites.
  • Recognize the complications and the management of them after alveolar ridge preservation and Guided Bone Regeneration.
