Hours of Operation

The Special Care and Geriatrics Clinic operates according to the following schedule:

Monday through Friday: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.

Eligibility Criteria

Special Care and Geriatrics Clinic serves those with:

  • Intellectual and developmental disabilities
  • Older adults who are medically complex 
  • Cognitive disorders - including but not limited to those with:
    • Alzheimer's disease
    • Dementia
    • Frontal temporal disorder
  • Cognitive or intellectual disorders
  • Autism Spectrum disorder
  • Down Syndrome
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Severe and/or challenging behaviors
  • Physical disabilities - interfere with ability to function include, but are not limited to: 
    • Multiple sclerosis
    • Blindness - if cannot function without assistance
    • Confined to wheelchair AND cannot transfer to dental chair
    • Transferred by stretcher AND cannot transfer to dental chair
    • Unable to ambulate or be transferred to dental chair
  • Hemophilia - for non-invasive procedures
  • Uncontrolled epilepsy
  • Receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy
  • On dialysis 
  • Waiting for organ transplant
  • Waiting for bone marrow transplant

Others may qualify.

Fees and Insurance

The Special Care & Geriatrics Clinic fees are slightly higher than those charged in the pre-doctoral dental clinic.

Medical Assistance

The Special Care & Geriatrics Clinic participates with the State of Maryland Medical Assistance Program for qualifying individuals.

Services

The University of Maryland School of Dentistry's Special Care & Geriatrics Clinic offers comprehensive dental care, including the following services:

  • Diagnostic services - including but not limited to:  examinations, x-rays
  • Preventive care  - cleanings and oral hygiene education
  • Periodontal treatment  - management of gum disease(s) 
  • Restorations  - fillings, crowns, bridges
  • Dentures - partial and complete dentures
  • Extractions or removal of teeth
  • Endodontics or root canals
  • Oral pathology consultations
  • Consultations
  • Implants
  • Conscious sedation services
