Hours of Operation
The Special Care and Geriatrics Clinic operates according to the following schedule:
Monday through Friday: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Eligibility Criteria
Special Care and Geriatrics Clinic serves those with:
- Intellectual and developmental disabilities
- Older adults who are medically complex
- Cognitive disorders - including but not limited to those with:
- Alzheimer's disease
- Dementia
- Frontal temporal disorder
- Cognitive or intellectual disorders
- Autism Spectrum disorder
- Down Syndrome
- Cerebral Palsy
- Severe and/or challenging behaviors
- Physical disabilities - interfere with ability to function include, but are not limited to:
- Multiple sclerosis
- Blindness - if cannot function without assistance
- Confined to wheelchair AND cannot transfer to dental chair
- Transferred by stretcher AND cannot transfer to dental chair
- Unable to ambulate or be transferred to dental chair
- Hemophilia - for non-invasive procedures
- Uncontrolled epilepsy
- Receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy
- On dialysis
- Waiting for organ transplant
- Waiting for bone marrow transplant
Others may qualify.
Fees and Insurance
The Special Care & Geriatrics Clinic fees are slightly higher than those charged in the pre-doctoral dental clinic.
Medical Assistance
The Special Care & Geriatrics Clinic participates with the State of Maryland Medical Assistance Program for qualifying individuals.
Services
The University of Maryland School of Dentistry's Special Care & Geriatrics Clinic offers comprehensive dental care, including the following services:
- Diagnostic services - including but not limited to: examinations, x-rays
- Preventive care - cleanings and oral hygiene education
- Periodontal treatment - management of gum disease(s)
- Restorations - fillings, crowns, bridges
- Dentures - partial and complete dentures
- Extractions or removal of teeth
- Endodontics or root canals
- Oral pathology consultations
- Consultations
- Implants
- Conscious sedation services
