Featured Learning Experiences

Global learning experiences provide UMSOD students and faculty with opportunities to engage in service, education, and collaboration beyond the United States. Through immersive experiences and international partnerships, participants develop an understanding of diverse communities, leadership skills, and a broader perspective on oral health needs and healthcare delivery around the world.

Dominican Dental Mission Project (DDMP)

Founded by UMSOD alumnus Dr. Frank Serio ('86), the Dominican Dental Mission Project (DDMP) provides UMSOD students with an immersive service-learning experience focused on improving access to oral health care in underserved communities in the Dominican Republic. Working alongside faculty mentors and community partners, students provide clinical services, oral health education, and preventive care while gaining firsthand experience in addressing oral health disparities and the social determinants of health.

Through direct patient care, cultural exchange, and community engagement, participants develop the skills and perspectives needed to serve diverse populations throughout their professional careers. The program reflects UMSOD's commitment to service, leadership, and advancing oral health beyond the walls of the dental school.

Dominican Republic Spring Break Service Program

Through a partnership with the Rotary Club of Baltimore and community partners in the Dominican Republic, UMSOD students participate in an annual spring break service-learning experience focused on improving oral health access for underserved populations. Working alongside faculty mentors and local healthcare professionals, students provide preventive and restorative care while gaining firsthand experience in global oral health, cultural competency, and community-centered care. Approximately 400 children are served annually. This experience is sponsored by Barry W. Rosenthal, DDS, 78, who in 2019 established the Barry W. Rosenthal Humanitarian Experiences Fund to provide international volunteer opportunities to dental students.

This partnerships is expected to begin August 2026.

Brazil Amazon Global Health Program

The Brazil Amazon Global Health Program offers UMSOD students and faculty a unique service-learning experience aboard a floating hospital that travels along the Amazon River, bringing healthcare services to remote and underserved communities. Through partnerships with local healthcare providers, academic institutions, and community organizations, participants gain firsthand exposure to the challenges and opportunities of delivering care in geographically isolated regions.

Working alongside interprofessional healthcare teams, students observe and contribute to efforts aimed at improving oral health and overall well-being in communities where access to care is often limited by distance and infrastructure. The experience provides valuable insight into population health, healthcare delivery in resource-constrained environments, and the social and environmental factors that influence health outcomes.

In addition to expanding their understanding of global oral health, participants develop cultural awareness, adaptability, and a deeper appreciation for the role of collaboration in addressing complex healthcare challenges.
