Policies & Special Circumstances
Readmission to the University of Maryland School of Dentistry
Consequent to dismissal or withdrawal, readmission may be sought by reapplication to the School of Dentistry. To initiate the readmission procedure, the former student shall submit a detailed letter, with supporting documents, to the Office of Admissions, requesting readmission to the School of Dentistry. Students dismissed for violations of the Professional Code of Conduct are ineligible for readmission. Determination of substantial evidence is within the school’s sole discretion.
Once the letter of application has been processed by the Office of Admissions, the Committee on Dental Recruitment and Admissions, in consultation with the appropriate departments, the progression committee, and administrative and non-administrative faculty members within the School of Dentistry, may consider the student for readmission. The process of consideration may include a careful review of the student’s academic record, a study of the reasons for readmission, and assessment of the student’s potential for academic success in the future.
Recommendations relative to the readmission will be referred to the Admissions Selection Subcommittee in conjunction with the Office of Admissions and Office of Academic Affairs for final decision and notification, including conditions for readmission, where appropriate. Decisions resulting from this policy are not subject to appeal.
Policy of Deferred Admission
- The University of Maryland School of Dentistry policy does not offer deferred admissions for the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) program.
- Each offer of acceptance is specific to the entering class year given in the offer.
- A student’s acceptance is valid only for the entering class year given in the offer.
- Applicants must repeat the application process in-full if they wish to be considered for admission in a different entering class year.
- An applicant’s acceptance of an offer of admission must include a deposit of $1,000 which is non-refundable.
- An applicant who pays the acceptance deposit, but does not enroll as scheduled, will not receive a refund. However, an applicant who re-applies and is accepted within 5 years of when the acceptance deposit was first received, may request that the earlier $1,000 deposit be applied to the subsequent acceptance deposit fee.
- The pool of applicants and other factors related to admissions may differ from year-to-year. An applicant should not consider a prior offer of admission to be an assurance that the student will be offered admission again upon re-application.
Admission with Advanced Standing Policy
Students currently enrolled in dental schools within the United States, as well as graduates of non-United States/non-Canadian dental schools, may apply for admission with advanced standing. It should be noted, however, that such admissions occur infrequently because of limited space availability or incompatibility of curriculum at different schools. Students admitted with advanced standing may be exempted from certain courses, based on a skills assessment by faculty.
Policy for Admission with Advanced Standing
The University of Maryland, School of Dentistry’s policy states that it may be possible for exceptionally talented graduates of a non-United States/ non-Canadian dental school to gain admission to the University of Maryland’s Doctor of Dental Surgery program with advanced standing. Candidates should be aware that the application process is complex since it is challenging to assess a candidate’s performance in different curricula at other institutions. Furthermore, all admissions considerations are contingent on space availability within the program. That is to say, there must be a vacant spot in the class to which an applicant is projected to be assigned.
This policy specifically addresses admissions requirements for two categories of candidates for admission with advanced standing:
