Judicial Policy

Dear Incoming Dental Students:

Congratulations on your acceptance to the Doctor of Dental Surgery Program at the University of Maryland, School of Dentistry. Your selection confirms your past scholastic achievements, professional integrity, high moral and ethical standards and your aptitude for further study in the pursuit of excellence in dentistry. We look forward to having you join our academic community.

In our society, health care practitioners function largely based on self-discipline, and self-regulation rather than on imposed regulations. Because we have maintained the highest moral and ethical standards over the years, the dental profession has earned a high degree of public confidence and trust. During your academic pursuits at the Dental School, you will be expected to adhere to these same high standards. The Dean and Faculty of this school are responsible for impressing upon you just how important ethics are as an integral part of dentistry. To help you better understand these standards, we have enclosed a copy of our Student Judicial Policy. Please read it and bring it with you when you begin in August.

It is your responsibility to read and familiarize yourself with the contents of the Student Judicial Policy. During orientation week, you will be given an examination on the contents of this policy. You must pass this examination prior to your first class session. We cannot stress enough how important it is to understand how ethics and professional morality impact on you, your future patients, and the profession as a whole.

The Classes hold elections for Class Officers and the Vice President becomes the representative on the Professional Conduct Committee for the Class. That person will help to shape and enforce Judicial Policy for all students at the Dental School. I look forward to meeting you and I hope you will feel free to contact me if I may be of any assistance to you. Please view the Judicial Policy presentation to prepare for the quiz on the Judicial Policy that will be given during orientation.

It is important that you read the policy thoroughly and view the presentation to prepare.

Appendix 1: Code of Conduct must be signed and submitted during the Judicial Policy presentation at orientation.
