The Teaching Program in Operative Dentistry

A dental student studies operative dentistry in UMSOD's simulation lab

The teaching program in Operative Dentistry encompasses all four years of dental education. Faculty of the division lecture and supervise the didactic instruction and technique for diagnosis and treatment planning for tooth restoration, dental materials selection, placement technique for amalgam and composite direct restoration, ceramic indirect inlay and onlay restoration, porcelain veneer indirect restorations, esthetic dentistry, and caries management by risk assessment.

D1: Freshmen learn basic information through lecture/seminar formats and then apply it in preclinical simulation laboratories where they treat typical dental conditions on manikins.

D2: Sophomores are given experiences in a clinical block format by examining and developing treatment plans for each other, plus they receive advanced lectures through electronic media presentations.

D3: Juniors have a semester of didactic lectures/seminars of a clinically advanced nature to supplement the basic information they received in preclinical courses, and they treat the restorative needs of their assigned comprehensive care patients.

D4: Seniors continue to develop their skills in Operative Dentistry diagnosis and treatment through their patients. They are given opportunities to treat patients under Northeast Regional Board Examination conditions to treat their patients’ needs and to prepare them for Board Examinations.

The divisional faculty teach the courses in intermediate and advanced operative dentistry integrated into treatment planning and supervise the oral health care delivery in the general practice predoctoral clinics in the third and forty-year dental school.

The Division of Cariology and Operative Dentistry faculty contributes to Postdoctoral, AEGD Residency Program, Master Programs, and Ph.D. Program in Biomedical Sciences.
