UMSOD Ceremonies

‌Throughout the academic year, the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) hosts various events to recognize its ‌students and the contributions they are making ‌to the Dental School, the UMB campus, and the Baltimore community. Please refer to this website regularly for information about upcoming UMSOD student ceremonies, such as the UMSOD Honors Convocation and the UMSOD White Coat Ceremony.

UMSOD Graduates
UMB Commencement and UMSOD Honors Convocation

Graduation events include: The University of Maryland, Baltimore Commencement Ceremony, a UMB graduate get-together known as Party in the Park, UMSOD Honors Convocation and a celebration to follow at the School of Dentistry. The UMSOD invites degree candidates to celebrate all graduation ceremonies with family, friends, classmates, faculty, staff, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore community.

Some important dates for the Class of 2019:

University of Maryland, Baltimore Commencement Ceremony: Thursday, May 16, 2019

Commencement is a ceremony for all UMB 2019 graduates. UMSOD diplomas will be distributed immediately following the ceremony. Commencement will be held at The Royal Farms Arena (Baltimore Arena, 201 W Baltimore St, Baltimore, MD 21201). Additional information about the 2019 Commencement will be announced soon.

“Party in the Park”

Immediately following UMB Commencement, UMSOD graduates join other UMB graduates for a festive university-wide celebration.

UMSOD Honors Convocation: Friday, May 17, 2019

The Honors Convocation is the recognition of degree completion. During the ceremony degree candidates walk across the stage and receive their hoods (DDS) or pins (BSDH). The graduating class selects two members of the faculty to hood or pin the graduates. Students may also pre-select individual hooders/pinners (one or two). Photographs of the graduates are taken with the Dean.

Tickets are required to attend Honors Convocation. The Office of Student Affairs will contact degree candidates regarding ticket distribution and other event details.

For Honors Convocation, if your group is traveling separately, we respectfully request that you plan to have all guests together before being seated; holding seats makes it difficult for UMSOD staff to efficiently usher guests in the venue.

As you prepare for the ceremony, please note that:

  • In early spring 2019, the UMB bookstore will host the “Grad Fair.” This is the time for you to order regalia. Announcements and rings can also be purchased by the graduate.
  • Accessible seating is limited at the venue. Guests need to contact Dr. Kate Noonan at (e-mail) knoonan@umaryland.edu or (phone) 410-706-7989, as soon as possible to inquire about accessible seating.

Celebration at the School of Dentistry: Friday, May 17, 2019

Immediately following the UMSOD Honors Convocation, graduates are invited to join family, friends, classmates, faculty, and staff for a reception at the school.

The Office of Student Affairs will contact degree candidates regarding ticket distribution and other event details.
