Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program celebrates 50th Anniversary!

Objective

For UMSOD Pediatric alumni, faculty, staff, students, residents, and friends to gather, celebrate, reconnect, and continue to learn. The event started with a welcome breakfast. The program began with a welcome from Dean Mark Reynolds and Department of Orthodontics and Pediatrics Department Chair Dr. Vineet Dhar. During the morning, attendees participated in two continuing education courses. Lunch was at the Dr. Samuel D. Harris National Museum with short tours of the Museum and presentations from Janet Wiley Assistant Dean, Office of Development & Alumni Relations and Dr. Glenn Canares. Once the lunch break has concluded, guests made their way back to the Dental School for one more continuing education course. The daytime portion was concluded with Dr. Norman Tinanoff. The evening celebration was at the Hilton, where there was a celebration and recognition of the accomplishments of the Pediatric Residency Program’s history.

Notable Pediatrics History

  • The post-graduate program in 1968 was the first specialist program at the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery.
  • Chairman Donald Forrester, Assistant Professor Mark Wagner, and Dean Salley established the program.
    • Mark Wagner is registered to attend.
  • In 1969, two residents enrolled and were the first to graduate in 1971.
  • There have been four Department Chairs:
    • Douglass John Sanders 1955-1966
    • Don Forrester 1967-1977
    • James Rule 1978-1998
    • Norman Tinanoff ’71 1998-2015
    • Vineet Dhar 2015 – Present
  • There have been eight Program Directors:
    • Mark Wagner 1969-71 also 1986-87
    • James Fleming 1971-1979
    • Ronald Abrams 1979-1985
    • Paul Biederman 1985-1987
    • Preston Shelton 1987-2007, Acting Chair 1977-78
    • Jill Wallen 2007-2011
    • Norman Tinanoff: 2012
    • Vineet Dhar 2013-current
  • Over the years, the program grew to four or five residents.
  • There are many impressive accomplishments of the Pediatrics Program; here are a few:
    • Natalia Chalmers, Chief Dental Officer, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
    • Warren Brill, Past-President of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry
    • Ed Ginsberg, Board of Directors of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry
    • Hakan Koymen, Past-President of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry
    • Charlie Coulter (DDS ’05, Peds ’07), Co-Founded D4C Brands, the nation’s largest and fastest-growing dental service organization (DSO) focused on pediatric dentistry and orthodontics. He has a private practice that he took over with six locations.
    • Harlyn Susarla (Peds ’16) 10 Under 10 Award presented by the ADA
  • Since 1971, there have been 193 graduates.
