Guy Alexander, DDS ’82

In recognition of his dedication to promoting excellence in oral health service and exemplary leadership through organized dentistry, Guy Alexander, DDS ’82, is the 2024 Distinguished Public Service Award honoree.

This award recognizes a graduate for meritorious professional leadership and service to the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) and the community.

“My passion for contributing to the dental community is based on my desire to increase or maintain the well-being of people, whether it’s in relationship to the School of Dentistry, organized dentistry, private practice, or volunteering,” said Alexander, who runs two private dental practices in Pikesville, Md., and Baltimore. He has specialized in general dentistry for over 40 years.

After graduating from Morgan State University in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, Alexander earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1982 from UMSOD.

He is actively engaged and supportive of his alma mater through leadership and mentorship. Since the year of his graduation, he has served as a member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors; from 2013 to 2014, he served as its president.

A longtime member of UMSOD’s Board of Visitors, he also has donated his time and expertise as a member of the Dean’s Faculty program, participating in the Access Carroll program since 2016.

Alexander holds leadership roles in myriad community service organizations including as a member of the Parish Council and Men’s Chorus for St. Francis Xavier Church; past president of the Holy Name Society; and board member of Uniting for Life.

Additionally, he has played an active role in several professional dental organizations such as the Maryland State Dental Association, for which he serves and has previously served on various committees, and the Baltimore City Dental Society, for which he has served as a trustee, delegate, executive board member, and president. Since 2013, he also has been a distinguished fellow of the American College of Dentists.

Being a part of organized dentistry and collaborating with fellow oral health care providers has allowed him the chance to improve patient care and better serve his community, Alexander said.
