This program, through its robust full-time and part-time OMS faculty, trains surgeons in the contemporary scope of oral-maxillofacial surgery to include implants, office anesthesia, dentoalveolar surgery, head and neck pathology, hard and soft tissue facial reconstruction, cleft-craniofacial surgery, TMJ surgery, CMF trauma, facial aesthetic surgery, and corrective jaw surgery.
We offer two residency training programs (one four-year and two six-year positions), several one-year internship positions, and a fellowship in maxillofacial oncology and microvascular reconstruction. The residency and the fellowship are fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.
About OMFS at UMSOD
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Maryland Dental School has a great history and tradition at UMDS. It is the first School of Dentistry in the world and maintains its legacy in education, research, and clinical practice. The current OMFS department is using innovative technology to maintain that vision, in the fields of cancer, facial deformity/clefts, trauma and temporomandibular joint surgery. Their mission is to develop “citizen surgeons” who will give back to their communities.

The University of Maryland Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery Associates Practice offers a full scope of high-quality care for oral, face, head-neck and jaw related conditions. An all-inclusive bridge between surgery, medicine and dentistry, we provide accurate diagnosis and comprehensive treatment for some of the most complex patients in the country.
Accreditation
The Department of Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery, Residency Program had its accreditation site visit on May 11, 2022 by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
We can comment on the successful reaccreditation without any reporting requirements for the next 5 years.
Complaints to the Commission on Dental Accreditation - The Commission on Dental Accreditation will review complaints that relate to a program's compliance with the accreditation standards. The Commission is interested in the sustained quality and continued improvement of dental and dental-related education programs, but does not intervene on behalf of individuals or act as a court of appeal for individuals in matters of admission, appointment, promotion or dismissal of faculty, staff or students.
