The mission of the Department of Biomaterials and Regenerative Dental Medicine is advancing oral health and improving lives by research, teaching and services. Our research focuses on regenerative dental medicine via stem cells, scaffolds, nanotechnology and bioactive agents, as well as developing bioactive, therapeutic dental restorative and preventive materials for tooth restorations In addition, the Department of Biomaterials and Regenerative Dental Medicine directs five courses for DDS students, PhD students, and residents Furthermore, the department trains the next generation of researchers, clinicians and educators to grow and become professors in dental schools and national and international leaders in their fields.

  • Bone Tissue Researcher Xu Wins Prestigious Award
The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) has honored Huakun Xu, PhD, MS, professor at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD), as the recipient of the 2018 IADR Isaac Schour Memorial Award.

  • Biomaterials Director Wins Isaac Schour Memorial Award
Huakun Xu, PhD, MS, professor in the Division of Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD), was awarded the 2018 International Association for Dental Research (IADR) Distinguished Scientist Isaac Schour Memorial Award.

  • Defeating Decay
That dental fillings could one day be made of an innovative restoration material that kills cavity-causing bacteria and strengthens teeth is as impressive as the man who pioneered the research, Huakun Xu, PhD, MS, professor at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry.
  • Stem Cell Study Raises Hope for Bone Repair Pastes
New stem cell studies at the University of Maryland Dental School demonstrate that surgeons could one day routinely use strong, moldable, and injectable pastes to regenerate needed bone tissue to repair broken bones, fractures, genetic defects, even combat bone wounds. The Dental School’s Huakun Xu, PhD, MS; Michael Weir, PhD, MS; and Ryan Zhao, MD, PhD, presented their findings today at the World Stem Cell Summit at the Baltimore Convention Center before hundreds of stem cell experts from 25 countries.

  • Nanotech Dental Filling Kills Bacteria, Strengthens Teeth
Researchers have made new fillings and filling cement that use nano-size bits of silver and calcium to kill bacteria and strengthen teeth.
