Registration Information

Core Imaging Facility Logo The Electron Microscopy Core Imaging Facility (EMCIF) is part of the Center for Innovative Biomedical Resources (CIBR) and is located on the sixth floor of Howard Hall (room nos. 696).  All EMCIF services are open to students, staff, and researchers from the University of Maryland Baltimore, other research institutions in the Baltimore/DC area as well as for-profit organizations.

‌‌‌To gain access to EMCIF services and instrumentation, users must first register in iLab, the campus-wide Core Facility management system (  Registration includes confirmation of a funding source for your project and requires the approval of the supervisor or principal investigator of the research group undertaking the project.  A one-time registration fee of $50 is applicable to establish new accounts.  If you have any question regarding iLab registration, please contact CIBR administrators (

To initiate a new EM research project request, researchers should contact the EMCIF Director, Dr. Ru-ching Hsia directly ( or submit a consultation request in iLab to discuss the type of EM research services that will be required so as to find out what is required for sample fixation before dropping off samples. Walk-in samples without pre-scheduling will be entered at the end of the current project schedule and may not be processed right away. Please beware that EMCIF services are in high demand and certain research projects may face long turn-around time.

Instrument training and training in specific EM techniques may be scheduled upon request. Please contact the EMCIF Director for details.  Additionally, EMCIF also offers comprehensive two or three-day mini-courses on Biological EM Sample Processing, Ultramicrotomy, Immuno EM, and more. These hands-on courses cover principles, practice and troubleshooting, and are very useful for investigators or students who wish to incorporate EM techniques in their research.

If you would like to be included in the EMCIF mailing list to receive facility news and event announcements, please send an email to EMCIF with "EMCIF mailing list" in the subject line.
