Speaker Biography

Dr. Don Tyndall is Professor in the Division of Diagnostic Sciences at the UNC Adams School of Dentistry. Dr. Tyndall graduated from UNC-CH in 1973 with majors in Biology and Ancient history. He received his D.D.S. in 1980 from the UNC School of Dentistry, his M.S.P.H. in Environmental Sciences and Engineering in 1984 specializing in Health Physics and his Ph.D. in 1988 in Health Physics from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health.

Dr. Tyndall was the Director of Radiology for the School of Dentistry from 1988 to 2019. He was the creator of the UNC Adams School of Dentistry’s graduate program in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and served as its director from 1993-2006.  Currently he is serving as Director of the Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology Predoctoral Program. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and was a Director and past President from 1995-1999. Dr. Tyndall has twice served as the Councillor for Scientific Affairs and Public Policy on the Executive Council of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (AAOMR). From 2000-2006 he served on the Radiology Review Committee of the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Dr. Tyndall currently serves as President of the AAOMR. In addition, he is a Fellow in the International College of Dentists.

Dr. Tyndall currently serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American Dental Association and is a member of the Journal of Endodontics Scientific Advisory Board as an expert in artificial Intelligence. He has also served as consultant to several dental imaging companies specializing in artificial intelligence, dental MRI, and intraoral tomosynthesis.

His research interests include artificial intelligence for radiologic diagnosis in 2D and 3D imaging, development of a novel multisource carbon nanotube x-ray system for cone beam CT units, 2D and 3D caries detection, applications of CBCT and stationary intraoral tomosynthesis (sIOT) in dentistry. His work as author or co-author has been published in more than 125 journal articles.

Dr. Jeffery Price is a Clinical Professor of Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology and Director of Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry in Baltimore, MD and is board certified by the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology. In addition, he is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists and an Adjunct Associate Professor of Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology at the UNC School of Dentistry in Chapel Hill, NC.

Before entering Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology, Dr. Price practiced general and adult restorative dentistry in Hendersonville, NC for 24 years. While in practice, Dr. Price completed the continuum at the L.D. Pankey Institute in Key Biscayne, FL; in addition, he attained his Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry as well as Diplomate status in the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.

Dr. Price is currently a North American Director for the International Association of Dento-Maxillofacial Radiologists and Secretary of the Board and Director of Education of the IADMFR. Course Description

This one day continuing education course introduces the principles of 3D tomosynthesis, a new intraoral imaging technique, MRI that is being developed for use in dentistry and Artificial Intelligence (AI) focusing on its use in dentistry. Dr. Jeffery Price, Clinical Professor and Director of Oral Radiology at the UMSOD, will begin the day by discussing 3D Tomosynthesis. We will then welcome a visiting professor, Dr. Don Tyndall, from the UNC Adams School of Dentistry, to discuss advancements in dental Cone Beam CT, dental MRI and AI.

The afternoon session will conclude with Dr. Ahmed Sultan, Assistant Professor of Oral Pathology, and Dr. Price providing further research review of dental AI with case reviews and an interactive demonstration of the use of AI in Dentistry.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the participants should be able to:

  • Describe the technology of 3D Tomosynthesis
  • Discuss the potential advantages of the use of 3D Tomosynthesis
  • Understand the recent research on the use of MRI in dentistry
  • Describe the basic principles of AI
  • Discuss the advantages and the limitations of using dental AI
  • Evaluate current and emerging dental AI applications
