Meet the Dental Hygiene Class of 2016

The dental hygiene class of 2016 officially joined the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) family during orientation on Monday, Aug. 11. With an average GPA of 3.6, the 26 incoming students arrived at UMSOD excited for the upcoming academic year. Here's what a few of the new students had to say:

Laura ColmenaresLaura Colmenares, of Ashburn, Va., has worked as a dental assistant for the past seven years. Colmenares is excited to begin a dental hygiene career so she can play a bigger role in educating underserved patients about the importance of oral health.

Natalie NessFor Natalie Ness, of Fawn Grove, Pa., a dental hygiene career is appealing because it offers her a rewarding way to help society. "I chose the University of Maryland School of Dentistry because of its excellent reputation. I'm looking forward to many opportunities for hands on learning," states Ness.


Amani AlmahbashiAmani Almahbashi, of Baltimore, chose to pursue dental hygiene because the career offers flexibility; Almahbashi has a two-year-old daughter. "Dental hygiene is a great profession that involves giving back to patients. As a dental hygienist, it will be so satisfying to see the results of my work right away," she remarks.
