Patricia Tordik, DMD, professor and director of postgraduate endodontics at the University of Maryland, School of Dentistry (UMSOD) and the UMSOD endodontics program recently received a prestigious research award. Dr. Tordik won the AAE Foundation/DENTSPLY Tulsa Dental Specialties Excellence in Research Award, which includes a $25,000 grant, for her dedication to promoting exceptional research education.

She received the award on July 18 from Margot Kusienski, DMD, a member of the AAE Foundation Board of Trustees, and Jason Halsey, east area regional sales manager for DENTSPLY Tulsa Dental Specialties. The award recognizes Dr. Tordik and the UMSOD Advanced Specialty Education in Endodontics Program for involving residents in innovative research projects. Presently, residents are conducting studies on several topics, including: a supplemental antibiotic to treat apical abscesses, a nanogel-based scaffold with antibacterial properties and the effects of residual bacteria on dental pulp regeneration.

Dr. Tordik is grateful for this award, since it will provide critical funding that will allow residents to begin or continue important research projects. Not only does their research add to the basis of knowledge for the specialty, it also teaches residents to be lifelong learners. "Exposing endodontics residents to research helps prepare them to critically read journal articles and decide what research will have an impact on clinical practice," she explains.

The AAE Foundation/DENTSPLY Tulsa Dental Specialties Excellence in Research Award is new award that will be presented annually at two educational institutions. "The American Association of Endodontists Foundation is excited to invest in innovation and research. By empowering endodontics research at universities across America, we can generate new knowledge to advance our specialty," remarks Dr. Kusienski.
