"To be recognized by my peers, the University of Maryland School of Dentistry faculty and the Alumni Association Board of Directors, validates my passion for dentistry and my chosen profession of dental hygiene. Receiving the Linda DeVore Dental Hygiene Alumnus Award is the greatest honor I have received."

After graduating from UMSOD in 1983, Howard entered the dental hygiene field and currently practices in Bethesda, Md. Throughout her professional career, she has held leadership roles in several local and state organizations. She served as president of the Montgomery County Dental Hygienists' Association from 1987-1988 and as legislative co-chair of the Maryland Dental Hygienists' Association in 1988. Howard was appointed to the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners in 1994 and was the first dental hygienist to hold the position of board president, serving from 2000-2001. She was named UMSOD Alumna of the Year in 2000. Howard also acted as the dental hygiene member-at-large for the executive board of the North East Regional Board of Dental Examiners from 2008-2011.

Howard has stayed connected with her alma mater by serving on the Alumni Association Board of Directors for 14 years. In 2011, she became the first hygienist to be elected president of the board.

She and her husband, Paul, reside in Potomac, Md. They have two children: David, 27, and Evan, 23.
