J. Roedel Jaeger, DDS '64, Named Distinguished Alumnus of the Year

J. Roedel (Rody) Jaeger, DDS '64, has been named the 2014 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year. He will be recognized during the All Alumni Reunion opening reception on May 30. Click here to register online for the complimentary reception.

"It is a great honor to be given this award," Jaeger says. "Considering all the outstanding graduates of the University of Maryland School of Dentistry and all the past individuals who have been honored, I am truly grateful."

Jaeger has been committed to advancing the dental profession since he graduated from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) in 1964. After graduation, he served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force at Wilford Hall Hospital on Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Jaeger returned to Baltimore in 1966 and established a private practice where he continues to work.

Active in organized dentistry, Jaeger has been a member of the Maryland State Dental Association since 1966, serving as president from 2003-2004. From 2002-2004, he was vice chairman of the American Dental Association (ADA) Council of Dental Education and Licensure. He has also served as president of the Baltimore County Dental Association and Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners. Jaeger was appointed to the North East Regional Board of Dental Examiners in 1985 and has participated on the examination committee since 1989. Jaeger is also a member of the American Dental Association, American Association of Dental Examiners, the Academy of General Dentistry, the American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists and the Baltimore Association of Dental Surgeons. He has been a member of the medical staff at Franklin Square Hospital since 1967.

He joined the UMSOD Alumni Association Board of Directors in 2003 and served as president from 2005-2006. Jaeger is currently a trustee for the endowment fund of the alumni association. He resides in Kingsville, Md., with his wife, Eunice. They have three children: Anne, Jill and Jennifer and five grandchildren.

The Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award honors a dental innovator who displays outstanding professionalism, philanthropy and community service. A tradition since 1956, the award recognizes an exceptional alumnus who has been chosen based on general dentistry or specialty, education, health care advocacy, research, administration and national and local dental services.
