Dental Students Travel to Ireland for Externship
A group of fourth-year dental students traveled to Ireland for an academic externship in October. They studied at The School of Dental Science at Trinity College in Dublin, which was founded in 1884 and remains the largest dental school in Ireland. The students enjoyed the opportunity to learn about dentistry and dental education in Europe.
"I enjoyed learning about the differences between UMSOD and the School of Dental Science at Trinity College. At Trinity, they have very few lectures. Instead, students are assigned different topics each day and they are responsible for researching those topics and reporting back to their assigned group. They must rely heavily on text books, articles and their peers as their main sources of knowledge. The experience made me truly appreciate the education I receive at UMSOD. I now realize the value of having a professor to guide students in each class," says Ai Vo, DDS '14.
"The Irish are a kind-hearted culture and everyone we met was very nice and optimistic. The most interesting thing that I saw while we were in Ireland were the Cliffs of Moher. The giant cliffs that overlook the Atlantic Ocean are the farthest point west in Europe. We also saw a castle that was built in the late 18th century by a wealthy Frenchman for his wife after she fell in love with the Irish scenery," remarks Sanaz Vahid, DDS '14.
