Dr. Davidson Appointed Chief of Clinics

Written by Adam Zewe

Clinical Associate Professor Joseph Davidson, DDS '70, has been appointed Chief of Clinics at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. In his new role, Dr. Davidson is responsible for ensuring that the dental clinics run smoothly, patients are satisfied with their experiences and students are able to graduate on time.

Improving the patient experience at UMSOD has become a passion for Dr. Davidson, who joined the school as a Dean's Faculty member in 2004. Dr. Davidson and the clinic administration will launch a call center that will triage patients more effectively. They also plan to create billing statements that are easier for patients to understand. Streamlining patient care is one of his top priorities. "If the patients are treated more expeditiously, students will get more of the experience they need," remarks Dr. Davidson.

For several years, Dr. Davidson has sponsored musical performances and magic shows in the Urgent Care Clinic. The entertainment is an outreach effort for patients, many of whom line up outside the school at 4 a.m. to receive treatment. "The performances are intended to take their minds off the physical pain," he says.

Dr. Davidson financially supports the clinics, as well. He recently established a trust fund called The Joseph and Elly Davidson Student Patient Help Fund. The fund provides small grants to pay for a necessary procedure that a patient is unable to afford. "I consider that a win-win situation. The patient will get help and the students will get the experience they need to ultimately become better dentists," states Dr. Davidson.
