Merit Scholarship Winner Profile: Simon Oh, DDS '12

Written by Adam Zewe

Dean Christian S. Stohler congratulates Simon Oh, DDS '12, for earning a merit scholarship. Oh received the Russell Gigliotti Memorial Student Scholarship, which recognizes his outstanding dedication to academic achievement. "Winning the scholarship was a pleasant surprise. I'm grateful to the donors who have made it possible," he remarks.

Oh, of North Potomac, Md., was inspired to pursue dentistry by a childhood friend who was born with a cleft palate. The young boy received treatment from an orthodontist, which boosted his confidence and helped him enjoy a happy childhood. After witnessing that transformation, Oh developed a passion for treating other children in need. "I want to help these kids fit back into their communities. The treatment for a cleft palate is life-altering," he says.

After graduation, he plans to enter an oral and maxillofacial residency program and then a fellowship. From there, he endeavors to join a team that treats cleft palates. The scholarship reduces his student debt, which allows Oh to pursue postgraduate education immediately after graduation. He looks forward to a career where he can improve the lives of his young patients.

In his spare time, Oh can be found on the golf course. He also plays electric guitar with InciDENTAL, a rock band composed of dental students.
