Merit Scholarship Winner Profile: Rania Khoury, DDS '13

Written by Adam Zewe

Dean Christian S. Stohler congratulates Rania Khoury, DDS '13, for earning a merit scholarship. Khoury, who received a Dr. Charles W. Hennessey Scholarship, feels pride that her hard work has been acknowledged. "I am very grateful to the donors who made my award possible," she states.

Khoury, of Rockville, Md., was inspired to pursue dentistry because of her childhood experiences with orthodontia. She sucked her thumb as a young child, which damaged her teeth. "I never thought I would have a good smile. From all the treatments I received, it boosted my confidence. It changed my life completely," she remarks. At UMSOD, she enjoys interacting with her classmates and feels gratified to be able to help patients.

Treating the underserved will be a priority for Khoury as she launches a dental career. While she was growing up in Austria, she learned the importance of aiding the less fortunate from her father, who worked for the United Nations. After graduation, she plans to complete a residency before establishing a private practice. She is also interested in public service dentistry. "Success for me will be making an impact on someone's life, whether they realize it or not," says Khoury.

In her spare time, Khoury loves to spend time with family, try new restaurants with friends and travel to exotic places like Aruba, Israel and Jordon.
