Roy L. Eskow, DDS '74, Honored as Distinguished Alumnus of the Year

Written by Adam Zewe

Roy L. Eskow, DDS '74, has been named the 2012 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year. The annual award honors a dental innovator who displays outstanding professionalism, philanthropy and community service. Dr. Eskow will be recognized during the All Alumni Reunion Opening Reception on June 1.

Dentistry has been part of daily life for Dr. Eskow since his childhood in Perth Amboy, N.J. His father, Jack, graduated from UMSOD in 1933 and served the community as a private practice dentist for more than 50 years. Ultimately, Dr. Eskow chose to follow in his father's footsteps and enroll at UMSOD. "My father was a true inspiration for me. The education, the experiences and the memories I took away from dental school were all spectacular," he remarks.

Throughout his dental training, Dr. Eskow also developed a passion for education. After earning a certificate in periodontics, he returned to UMSOD as a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Periodontology. He enjoyed working alongside professors who had inspired him while he was a student. Even after establishing a successful private practice near Washington, D.C., Dr. Eskow continues to teach as a volunteer member of the Dean's Faculty. "Working with students is a true highlight. I know that they are going to be the stars of the future," says Dr. Eskow.

Volunteering at UMSOD is especially meaningful to Dr. Eskow. He serves on the Board of Visitors and is a past member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors. Community service is also one of his priorities. Dr. Eskow volunteers at the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington in Rockville, Md., where he treats dental patients who face financial or physical challenges. "The ability to give back and provide a service to people who can't afford it is extremely rewarding," he states.

One of Dr. Eskow's most rewarding experiences was watching his son, Adam, graduate from UMSOD in 2010. Adam, the 15th dentist in the Eskow family, has chosen to follow his father's path and is pursuing a certificate in periodontics. Dr. Eskow and his wife, Julie, have two other children: Shawn, who works as a CPA and attorney, and Kimberly, a financial expert who works for Morgan Stanley. When he's not busy working or volunteering, Dr. Eskow enjoys playing golf and traveling with his wife.
