Merit Scholarship Winner Profile: Suzanne Grey, DDS '13

Written by Adam Zewe

Dean Christian S. Stohler congratulates Suzanne Grey, DDS '13, for earning four merit scholarships. Grey received Gaylord, Dr. Elizabeth S. and Dr. William Powell, Dr. Charles W. Hennessey, and General scholarships. She appreciates the generous donations that made her awards possible.

Grey moved to Maryland eight years ago from Mandeville, Jamaica, a city of 50,000 people located west of the Caribbean countryýs capital, Kingston. At first, she found it difficult to adjust to the fast-paced U.S. lifestyle, and the challenges of dental school coursework. "Jamaica is a lot more laid back. Americans are always on the go. I had to change my whole mentality," she remarks.

Always interested in healthcare, Grey chose to pursue a dental career because she developed a passion for oral health. She feels gratified when she helps improve a patientýs smile. Grey especially enjoys interacting with her patients. After graduation, she is considering specializing in orthodontics or returning to Jamaica to perform public health dentistry. "In Jamaica, people take their oral health for granted. It would be nice to give back to the community where I was raised," states Grey.

In her spare time, Grey volunteers with a number of student groups, including the American Student Dental Association, Student Dental Association and Student National Dental Association. She also enjoys traveling, and visits her family in Jamaica as frequently as possible.
