Merit Scholarship Winner Profile: Zachary Schonfield, DDS '13

Written by Adam Zewe

Dean Christian S. Stohler congratulates Zachary Schonfield, DDS '13, for earning four merit scholarships. Schonfield received Dean's Excellence, Gaylord, Dr. Joseph Anthony Pennino and General scholarships. He appreciates the donors who made his awards possible.

Schonfield, of Watertown, N.Y., developed an interest in dentistry by learning from his father, who works as a private practice dentist. Dentistry appeals to Schonfield because he can be his own boss while improving the oral and overall health of his patients. He enjoys taking responsibility for patient care and interacting with the people he serves. "I like the variety general dentistry offers. No two days would be the same," he remarks.

After graduation, Schonfield plans to establish a private practice. A natural problem-solver, he looks forward to determining the best treatments for his own patients. "It will be interesting to apply different knowledge and technology to patient care," states Schonfield. He also focuses on giving back, expressing a strong desire to volunteer through an international outreach program, like Dentists Without Borders.

In his spare time, Schonfield enjoys hiking and travelling internationally. He also volunteers as a diver at the National Aquarium, where he helps feed the fish and stingrays.
