Merit Scholarship Winner Profile: Tom Melanson, DDS '12

Written by Adam Zewe

Dean Christian S. Stohler congratulates Tom Melanson, DDS '12, for earning a merit scholarship. Melanson received a Russell Gigliotti Memorial Student Scholarship. He feels honored to accept the award and expresses gratitude for the generous donations that made the scholarship possible.

Before enrolling at UMSOD, Melanson taught high school science for several years. The Baltimore native decided to change careers and chose dentistry because he enjoys working with his hands. Going from teacher to student has been challenging for Melanson, be he takes great pride in his clinical skills. "I feel a real sense of accomplishment at the end of the day. I helped someone, whether I relieved their pain or fixed their smile so they are no longer embarrassed," he remarks.

Melanson recently accepted a position as a general dentist with Dental Associates of Timonium. He plans to eventually establish a general dentistry practice near Annapolis. Melanson looks forward to private practice so he can be his own boss. "I'm excited to treat a wide range of patients in family practice," states Melanson.

A dedicated sports fan, Melanson played professional lacrosse for the Baltimore Bayhawks in 2005. He continues to play lacrosse in his spare time. Melanson also enjoys playing with his pet German shepherd and listening to high end audio equipment.
