Merit Scholarship Winner Profile: Alexandra Biga, DDS '13

Written by Adam Zewe

Dean Christian S. Stohler congratulates Alexandra Biga, DDS '13, for earning a merit scholarship. Biga received a Charles W. Hennessey Scholarship, which honors her academic success. She expresses gratitude for the donor support that made the award possible. "It is intimidating to start a career. The scholarship helps me reduce my debt, which is a huge help," she remarks.

Helping the less fortunate has always been a passion for Biga, of Kingston, Pa. Her desire to serve others sparked her interest in the medical field. Biga decided to enroll at UMSOD because dentistry combines her love of science with her creativity. She enjoys learning from such a committed group of professors. Treating patients is especially fulfilling, since it is a culmination of those classroom lessons.

After graduation, Biga is considering an orthodontics or endodontics residency. She looks forward to starting her own dental practice, where she will be able to work with patients one-on-one and help improve their lives. "We all should give back in some way, but each person needs to find service that fits them. Dentistry fits my personality," Biga states.

An avid sports fan, Biga enjoys watching football, baseball and basketball, as well as running and cycling. She also volunteers at My Sister's Place, a Baltimore homeless shelter for women.
