Donor Establishes Memorial Scholarship Fund

Written by Adam Zewe

Mrs. Margaret Thome plans to honor her son, Dennis Thome, DDS '66, by establishing a scholarship in his memory. She donated $100,000 to the School of Dentistry, creating The Dennis M. Thome Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund will award an annual scholarship to a dental student based on need and merit.

Dennis Thome, who passed away on May 22, 2009, operated an oral surgery practice in Dundalk, Md. "My son was such a good dentist," Margaret recalls, beaming with pride. "I felt like he should be remembered in this way."

Mrs. Thome has fond memories of the School of Dentistry. She grew up two blocks from the school, when it was located on Lombard Street, and received her childhood dental care in UMSOD clinics. Fascinated by dentistry, Mrs. Thome remembers stopping on the street to peek through the windows at working dental students.

When Dennis established a private practice, Mrs. Thome worked alongside him, keeping the office organized and preparing patients for exams. She is thrilled that the scholarship could assist a new generation of dentists. "It would be great to help a student who might not be able to finish dental school without this scholarship," states Margaret.

Mrs. Thome's generous gift creates an important scholarship endowment. About 80 percent of the student body receives financial assistance each year.
