Merit Scholarship Winner Profile: Joon Park, DDS '12

Written by Adam Zewe

Dean Christian S. Stohler congratulates Joon Park, DDS '12, for earning two merit scholarships. Park, who received Russell Gigliotti Memorial Student and Gaylord scholarships, feels grateful to be selected. The scholarships enable him to enter an endodontics residency program after graduation.

Dentistry will be a third career for Park, who moved to Maryland from Seoul, South Korea, 16 years ago. After earning an undergraduate degree in information systems, he worked as a software programmer and later as a watchmaker. Following the advice of a friend, Park decided to pursue dentistry. He enjoys working with his hands and interacting with patients. "I get a lot of personal satisfaction from helping patients. Their gratitude makes my day," he remarks.

After completing an endodontics residency, he plans to eventually establish his own private practice. Fascinated by dental research, Park endeavors to join a scientific team studying pulp regeneration. He hopes to return to UMSOD in the future as a clinical professor. "I don't think my learning process will end when I graduate. It's going to be a lifelong journey," states Park.

When he's not busy with schoolwork, Park enjoys playing tennis, golfing, snowboarding and camping with friends and family.
