Merit Scholarship Winner Profile: Diana Shoe, DDS '12

Written by Adam Zewe

Dean Christian S. Stohler congratulates Diana Shoe, DDS '12, for earning three merit scholarships. Shoe received Dr. Elizabeth S. and Dr. William Powell, Dean's Excellence and the Dr. Henry S. Hohouser scholarships. She expresses gratitude to the donors who made the awards possible. "Receiving these scholarships makes me want to give back to students in the future. I could be one of those donors," Shoe remarks.

Shoe, a native of Huancayo, Peru, moved to Owings Mills in 2005 when she married her husband, Jason. A medical student in Peru, Shoe planned to finish medical school in the U.S., but switched to dentistry because she considers the career a better fit. "I enjoy working with my hands and being able to see the results right away. It is rewarding to help patients smile again," states Shoe.

Fluent in Spanish, Shoe treats many Hispanic patients in the clinics and enjoys building bonds with this population. She plans to pursue a general practice or advanced general dentistry residency after graduation and then enter private practice. Outreach is a priority for Shoe, who stays active in the Student Hispanic Dental Association. She hopes to periodically visit Peru to provide dental care for underserved patients.

In her spare time, Shoe enjoys mountain biking, playing the guitar and reading.
