Merit Scholarship Winner Profile: Ashton Butler

Written by Adam Zewe

Dean Christian S. Stohler congratulates Ashton Butler, DDS '12, for earning three merit scholarships. Butler received Edward S. Gaylord, Dr. Henry S. Hohouser and Dr. A. P. Lazauskas scholarships. The awards recognize Butler's outstanding academic achievements. "I am extremely proud to have won. I've worked really hard for the past three years and I'm glad the school decided to recognize that in such a big way," she remarks.

She is grateful for the scholarships, which allow her to immediately enter an AGD or general practice residency following graduation. After residency, Butler plans to establish a private practice near her hometown, Greenville, S.C. She looks forward to building relationships with patients and their families. "I want to serve the people in my hometown, who have helped form the person that I am today. I want to be a part of that community," states Butler.

For Butler, treating patients has been the most rewarding part of dental school. She especially enjoyed caring for underserved villagers during a recent externship in the Dominican Republic. Helping people in need, both domestically and internationally, will be her priority throughout her dental career.

An avid equestrian, Butler leases a horse at St. Timothy's School in Baltimore County, which she rides in competitive shows.
