Merit Scholarship Winner Profile: Robert Brown

Written by Adam Zewe

Dean Christian S. Stohler congratulates Robert Brown, DDS '13, for earning two merit scholarships. Brown received Edward S. Gaylord and Dr. Charles W. Hennessey scholarships. The awards acknowledge Brown's dedication to achieving academic excellence.

Dentistry appeals to Brown because it allows him to own a business while helping patients. He enrolled at UMSOD after shadowing dentists in Provo, Utah, where he earned his undergraduate degree at Brigham Young University. "I witnessed many amazing stories of people whose lives were changed when they turned around their oral hygiene," he states. He hopes to have an impact on many patients through his dental career. He enjoys using state-of-the-art technologies and learning about the latest dental research. Close interaction with faculty in the clinic is rewarding, says Brown. "I feel very confident in my abilities because faculty members instill confidence in me," remarks the Pikesville native.

Building on his desire to give back, Brown applied for a National Health Service Corps Scholarship. If he is selected, he will provide dental care in an underserved community for two years. Brown is also considering a residency in orthodontics.

A husband and father of two, Brown spends his free time taking day trips with his wife, Carrie, and their children, 3-year-old Tommy and 1-year-old Emma.
