Merit Scholarship Winner Profile: Cindy Ding

Written by Adam Zewe

Dean Christian S. Stohler congratulates Cindy Ding, DDS '13, for earning two merit scholarships. Ding received a Dean's Excellence Award and a Dr. Joseph Anthony Pennino Memorial Scholarship.

Both scholarships recognize Ding's outstanding academic achievements. "I know that dental school is very competitive, so to be chosen for a merit scholarship out of so many students is a great honor," she states.

A Gaithersburg native, Ding's decision to enroll in UMSOD followed a lifelong interest in the medical field. Ultimately, she chose the career because dentistry enables her to relieve pain, which greatly improves a patient's quality of life. She enjoys helping people in need and working alongside so many talented classmates.

Scholarships help to reduce student debt. Ding is grateful for her UMSOD scholarship assistance because it will enable her to apply for a residency program immediately after graduation. After completing a residency, she plans to launch a private practice in Maryland. "I'm looking forward to being my own boss and relying on myself to make decisions. It is both scary and liberating," remarks Ding.

When she's not studying or working in the clinic, Ding loves to watch movies. She also stays active at the gym and tries out new restaurants with friends.
