Hygiene Graduates Earn Research Award

Written by Adam Zewe

Three recent Dental Hygiene graduates won third place in a national research poster contest during the American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA) Annual Session.

Allyson Luckman, Shifra Beren and Whitney Feizipour, RDH '11, received a $300 cash prize for their research poster entitled "Reducing Patient Risk: Microbial Biofilm & Maintenance of Low-Volume Evacuation Lines." The ADHA also awarded a $300 cash prize to the school of dentistry.

Luckman and Beren presented the research at the Nashville meeting. Their project examined the effectiveness of using disinfectant wipes to clean bacteria from dental evacuation lines. They found that wiping evacuation lines after each patient exam did not stop bacteria from growing. A better cleaning method is necessary, the students concluded.
