Dr. Howard Strassler to Teach Continuing Education Course
Written by Adam Zewe
University of Maryland Dental School faculty member Dr. Howard Strassler will teach "Smart Bonding: Extraordinary Solutions for Ordinary Problems" on Saturday, Feb. 12 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. He will present the course with Dr. Eric Levine, assistant professor of operative dentistry.
Strassler is a seasoned professional with international standing and has taught more than 500 continuing education courses throughout the world, from England to Norway to Japan. He gave his first national lecture in Orlando, facing a room full of professors who had written many of his dental school textbooks. It was awe-inspiring and terrifying at the same time. "I think I changed my slides 20 times," Strassler recalls.
Since that time, Strassler is now known as a premier continuing education speaker. "A good educator is not just knowledgeable, but an entertainer as well," he remarks. Strassler lectures about restorative dentistry, and considers himself lucky to have entered the profession in the 1970s when technology was quickly advancing. As he's stayed up to date with new trends, he's also documented them. An avid photographer since age 7, Strassler uses many images throughout his presentations.
As a lifelong educator, he's excited about the Smart Bonding class because it gives him the chance to see some of his former students. The course will also provide students with new ideas to incorporate in their practices. Strassler strives to keep things fresh, whether he's behind a podium or in front of a patient. "There's that cliche' about thinking outside the box, but for me, there never was a box," he says.
