| Richard L. Wynn, PhD
Richard L. Wynn, PhD is a Professor of Pharmacology at the Dental School, University of Maryland Dental School. He is a registered pharmacist in the State of Maryland. Dr. Wynn chaired the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Maryland Dental School from 1980 to 1995. He has over 300 publications including original research articles, textbooks, book chapters, monographs, and articles in continuing education journals. He has given over 500 continuing education seminars to dental professionals in the US, Canada, Mexico and Europe. He has spoken in every University of Pittsburgh continuing education off-site program over the last 10 years. Dr. Wynn has been a consultant for the drug industry for 25 years and his research laboratories have contributed to the section, the Academy of General Dentistry, and the American Dental Association. He is a featured columnist and his drug review articles entitled "Pharmacology Today" appear in each issue of the journal General Dentistry, published by the Academy of General Dentistry. He is the lead author of Drug Information Handbook for Dentistry, now in its 15th edition. One of his primary interests is keeping dental professionals informed on all aspects of drug use in practice. | | | | Course Description | | This course will present a mix of the most recent reports describing new drugs and dental products, herbal supplements and how nutraceuticals have an impact on dental and dental hygiene practice. The latest on heart attacks, CRP levels and periodontal disease and the benefits of moderate alcohol consumption will be discussed. Also described will be the latest updates on bisphosphonate-associated necrotic jaw bone and the Fosamax patient. For herbal supplements, free radicals, reactive oxygen species, and effective antioxidants will be described, including CQ10 and Alpha-Lipoic Acid. The latest in dental herbal products will be discussed. For nutraceuticals, foods and their medical uses will be described including fish oil capsules, omega-3’s and heart health, and vitamin D and decreased cancer risks and more. | | Course Objectives | | - List and describe the effectiveness of the new medical and dental drugs.
