Staying Current with HIPAA Regulations
Presented by: Christine Wisnom, RN, BSN
Course Description:
Electronic date and patient privacy remain a challenge for dentistry today. Do you access scheduling, finances, progress notes and digital imaging from your office at non-secured WiFi locations? What is the risk of a breach of information? The National Health Care Reform has designated $19 billion to establish electronic records for all Americans by 2014. Is your practice prepared? Civil penalties against practitioners who fail to comply with HIPAA regulations are increasing, and federal criminal penalties are as high as $250.000 and 10 years in jail, so it is vital to revisit HIPAA.
The program discusses these topics, and reviews HIPAA recommendations for protecting patient information in the mail, workplace and electronic devices. Numerous sample HIPAA documents are provided.
Course Objectives:
Upon the conclusion of this presentation, each participant should be able to:
- Comprehend the evolution of the HIPAA recommendations. HIPAA recommendations can be updated annually by the Department of Health and Human Services
- Train all new employees on the office HIPAA policies and procedures within 30 days of hire, with an annual review, or more often as the laws change; recording all training in the HIPAA manual
- Obtain the sample HIPAA documents for: Complaint, Notice of Privacy Policy, Acknowledgement of Receipt of Notice of Privacy Practices and Access to Records Request Form
- Understand the protocols for incorporating the recommendations and sample documents into clinical practice
