General Information:

The Maxillofacial Oncology & Microvascular Reconstructive fellowship at the University of Maryland is an accredited comprehensive two-year program dedicated to training surgeons in the diagnosis and management of patients with head & neck cancer. Off-site training facilities also include Sinai Hospital of Baltimore and Mt. Nittany Regional Medical Center, State College, Pa.

Qualifiations:

Completion of an accredited Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program and eligibility for medical/dental licensure in the State of Maryland. Candidates are strongly encouraged to have completed an M.D./D.D.S. or M.D./D.M.D. residency program , or its equivalency, and have completed  one year of post-graduate general surgery training.

General Responsibilities:

The fellow is responsible for carrying out those clinical duties assigned by the Oral & Maxillofacial Oncology/Reconstructive Surgery faculty. Administrative duties will include the daily management of the oncology service, assist in the pre-operative scheduling of patients and the presentation of patients at the multi-disciplinary head & neck tumor board. The fellow will provide second on- call for the surgical residents assigned to the Maxillofacial Oncology service. The fellow is expected to participate in clinical research with the goal of publication in a peer reviewed journal.

Objectives:

To develop a comprehensive understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of patients with head & neck cancer
Understand the roles and limitations of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy in the management of head & neck cancer
Understand various methods of surgical reconstruction of head & neck cancer defects including local, regional and distant microvascular free tissue transfer
To achieve surgical competency in the techniques of head & neck tumor ablation and reconstruction through first surgical assist in all operative cases, fresh cadaveric tissue dissection and practice in the microvascular animal training facility
Develop skills to become an integral faculty member in an Oral & Maxillofacial surgical unit
Develop an understanding of various diagnostic imaging modalities used in the treatment of head & neck cancer patients
Development of leadership skills through the daily management of the Oral & Maxillofacial Oncology service, organization of pre-operative case conference and presentation of patients at the multi-disciplinary head & neck tumor board
Presentation of original research data at nationally and internationally recognized scientific meetings in the field of head & neck cancer/reconstruction
Publication of original research in a peer reviewed journal
