Patrik M. Bavoil, PhD, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Microbial Pathogenesis in the University of Maryland School of Dentistry and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology of the School of Medicine. Dr. Bavoil received undergraduate education in France at the University of Grenoble and the University of Lyon. He received graduate training in the U.S. under the mentorship of Hiroshi Nikaido at University of California at Berkeley where he earned his Ph.D. in 1982. Following postdoctoral training at UCSF under Julius Schachter (1983-1984), and Stanford University under Stanley Falkow (1984-1987), Dr. Bavoil became Assistant, then Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology of the University of Rochester (1987-1996). He then moved to England to take a position as Senior Lecturer, then Reader in the Department of Infectious and Tropical Diseases at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. In 2002, Dr. Bavoil moved back to the U.S. to take a faculty position in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the school of dentistry. Dr. Bavoil became chair of the newly-formed Department of Microbial Pathogenesis in July, 2008. Dr. Bavoil is currently President of the Chlamydia Basic Research Society (CBRS) and Chief-Editor of the journal FEMS Immunology and Medical Microbiology, soon to be relaunched as "Pathogens and Disease" (01/01/13).
