Geriatrics

As the population ages, and in particular, as the baby boomers enter their 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's, the Dental School is training their students to be better prepared to treat and to manage the older adult special needs population.

The Gerontology and Geriatrics Education Training at the Dental School is based on the concept that providing care to medically compromised older adults requires a well-rounded interdisciplinary education in Gerontology and Geriatrics. Students are exposed to a wide range of health disciplines focused on Aging as well as many oral health care providers with practices focusing on older adults. In addition to dental techniques useful for older adults, disciplines included in the curriculum include: Geriatric Medicine, Geriatric Psychology, Health Law, Physical Therapy, Geriatric Nursing, Social Work, Physiatry (Rehabilitation Medicine), and Hospice Care.

Students are provided didactic training in Gerontology and Geriatrics Education during the first three years of the Dental School curriculum, and are required to participate in extramural clinical experiences during the last two years of training. Extramural activities focus on the role of dentists and oral health care in long term care facilities, life care centers and in community based Geriatric Assessment Programs.

Senior dental students can also elect to participate in a Geriatric Dentistry Clerkship, in which they have additional opportunities to participate in Geriatric Dental activities.
