The Department of Diagnostic Sciences and Pathology was established in July 2001 as a merger of the two previously successful departments (Diagnostic Sciences and Oral Pathology). This merger represented a vision of bringing together the clinical aspects of Oral Diagnosis, Oral Medicine and Oral Radiology with the clinical and basic science aspects of Oral Pathology. Each program had previously been successful in its mission of teaching, service and research and improved success is expected in the future. This new department represents a clear example in the school of the potential for translational research bringing new cutting edge knowledge through basic sciences studies and research to the clinical and teaching arenas in the dental school. The mission, therefore, is also to provide the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery University of Maryland Dental School, University of Maryland Baltimore with state of the art research efforts in cancer and molecular biological approaches to study the pathogenesis and management of diseases. - Application of cutting edge diagnostic technologies including clinical assessment expertise of faculty, laboratory and immunological testing, and the latest in radiological techniques.
- State of the art oral medicine/clinical care delivered in a hybrid medical model serving our medically compromised patients with their oral medicine soft and hard tissue pathology, as well as providing counseling and prevention of oral pathologies such as cancer in the future.
- A close working relationship with our medical colleagues at the Greenebaum Cancer Center for management of oral complications during chemotherapy, radiation therapy and/or other causes of immunosuppression.
The research efforts in the department reflect and build upon these individual missions by investigational studies in each of the areas funded through the NIH and/or industrial partnerships. |
