Oral Medicine Clinic The Department of Diagnostic Sciences and Pathology has established an Oral Medicine Clinic within the dental school. The goal of this clinic is to assist in the diagnosis and management of soft and hard tissue pathologies other than caries and periodontal disease. As part of this goal, tracking and appropriate follow up of dental school patients, relative to such lesions, will be accomplished and diagnosis, referral and management suggestions for private patients will be made. At present the clinic is accepting patients by appointment to be seen on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 1:30 to 4:30 PM. Appointments are made through the emergency clinic and patient admissions staff, including Ms. Jan McCrumb, Cheryl Manns and Lorraine Pitts. At present these patients are evaluated in a section of the emergency clinic facility on the first floor. Typical patients include those referred from patient admissions (screening) or patients identified after assignment to dental or post graduate students. Outside referrals from general practitioners and specialists are also accepted. Faculty or students referring patients should call 6-7956 and speak to Ms. McCrumb or stop by the emergency clinic/admissions area to make the appointment. If possible, the student who is assigned to the patient should be available for 5-10 minutes on the day of appointment in order to describe the reason for referral, otherwise, a clear note in the chart should be present. The practice of on-the-spot triage of any lesion by Diagnostic Sciences faculty will continue in order to determine the need for urgent management. However, when resolution of such conditions is not obvious, they will be referred to the Oral Medicine clinic for more thorough evaluation and follow up. At present Drs. T.F. Meiller, B. A. Balciunas, Ray Lee and K. Garber are assigned to the clinic area to oversee the operation of the clinic. Appropriate fees for evaluation, biopsy and treatment will be charged to the PATIENT’S MEDICAL INSURANCE. If the patient does not have medical insurance or the claim is denied, the fee will be determined after review by the director. Fees for follow-up visits will also be submitted to medical insurance and/or determined on a case-by-case basis. Referrals help this clinic better serve our patient population at the dental school. |
