 About the Program

Welcome to the University of Maryland Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery site.  We currently offer a 6-year residency training program.  This program has a long history of offering an exceptional experience in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, complimenting our strong core OMS training with maxillofacial oncology, major maxillofacial trauma, microvascular surgery, and cleft surgery.

The University of Maryland's integrated residency - M.D. program is a fully accredited specialty training experience that is six years in length. During the trainee's first year, ten months are spent in clinical Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery and two months on the Anesthesiology service. The trainee also participates in an eight month long course in patient evaluation at the medical school. Residents are required to take and pass Part I of the National Medical Boards prior to being given advanced standing in the medical school.

The second and third years are spent in the medical school at the third and fourth year levels.  Elective months are spent in Oral-Maxillofacial Pathology, Anesthesiology and Oculo-plastic surgery. The trainee spends the fourth year of the program as a General Surgery PGY-1 resident.

The fifth and sixth years of the program are spent on the Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery service, with 12 months as Chief Resident, rotating between the house, trauma, and pathology services.  Rotations to other hospitals occur to provide additional training in aesthetic and orthognathic surgery.

The following two years (2 and 3) will have the trainee’s time divided between clinical Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and various medical and surgical rotations to include Internal Medicine, General and Trauma Surgery, Critical Care, Oculo-plastic surgery, Otorhinolaryngology, Anesthesiology, and Neurosurgery.

The fourth year will be spent as Chief Resident, rotating between the house, trauma, and pathology services.

While on the Oral-Maxillofacial Service, the trainees participate in all clinical activities as well as the didactic program. Conferences include oral pathology, medical science, CPC, case presentation, journal review and quality assurance. In addition, combined residency seminars are held with the Departments of Orthodontics on Orthognathic Surgery, and with Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery on Craniofacial Reconstruction.  Hospital teaching rounds are also used extensively. Trainees are paid while on a clinical service with the current range of $43,919 to $53,245, plus benefits.

The University of Maryland campus is located in Baltimore's spectacular Inner Harbor district, directly adjacent to Oriole Park at Camden Yards and Baltimore Ravens football stadium. The campus includes the University of Maryland Medical Center Hospital and world famous R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. Numerous clinical and research institutions are present on the campus locally. The hospitals have a combined capacity of about 1,000 beds. The campus also includes the University's newly constructed Dental School, Graduate School, and the Schools of Medicine, Law, Social Work, Nursing, and Pharmacy.

The Baltimore area offers an abundance of affordable apartments, condominiums and homes. The city offers many cultural, athletic, historic, and other leisure events. The city is also a short distance from Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and the Eastern Shore.  Areas for hunting, fishing, hiking, and boating are plentiful.  Residents are eligible for tickets for certain Orioles and Ravens ball games and the Baltimore Symphony at no cost courtesy of the UMMC housestaff association.

Call rooms are available for residents required to stay in the hospital.  A resident lounge is also available. Residents are provided two weeks of vacation during the first year, three weeks during years four and five, and four weeks during year six.  While in medical school, trainees take the usual school vacations built into the academic schedule.
