| Dentistry Today 2004 (formerly known as Operation Dental Career) was held from June 2nd – June 4th at the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, Dental School, University of Maryland. The program overlapped our Alumni Weekend and was a wonderful example of the continuum of education; for the Dentistry Today participants, the hopeful start toward a career in dentistry, and for our alumni, an opportunity to participate in continuing education at their Alma Mater. Thirty-six college students and two high school students took part in the program. Participants were primarily from the mid-Atlantic region, but some came from as far away as Los Angeles. The program provided opportunities to learn more about the dental profession, dental education, and the dental specialties from various Dental School faculty. Topics included esthetic dentistry, oral surgery, periodontics, implantology, acupuncture, forensic dentistry, anatomy, restorative dentistry, pharmacology, and research. Students were given the opportunity to tour the school and observe our rising seniors treating patients in the clinics. Additionally, students had an opportunity to work on dental manikins in the simulation laboratories. The participants reported that the program provided them an opportunity to learn more about the dental profession and the University of Maryland Dental School. We look forward to playing a possible future role in their dental education.
